Working to grow Rockcastle County – Livingston Trail Town
Work began in the City of Livingston six years ago as a beautification project. Development Board members and city volunteers met on a regular basis to review what beautification projects should be done. The Development Board applied for a series of ARC grants to help with the process of painting, landscaping and signage.
Like many small towns, Livingston had fallen into disrepair and had no economic development prospects. As the town cleaned up and became more inviting, it seemed that the area had a lot to offer – Rockcastle River, Red Hill Horse Camp, trails, Wildcat Mountain, Civil War Battlefield, pioneer history and natural landscapes to entice outdoor adventurers.
Fortunately, an invitation was extended to the Adventure Tourism Department to come and see the Livingston area and to explore how Livingston could tap into the tourism industry. When Elaine Wilson, Director of Adventure Tourism scheduled a date to visit with the Development Board, Revitalization Committee and interested residents, a new project was being developed by Governor Beshear and Adventure Tourism and the program was called “Trail Town”.
The idea of Trail Town was to begin and end outdoor activities in town. The increased traffic would add sales to existing restaurants and inspire entrepreneurs to open businesses in town.
The Development Board facilitated the rigorous Trail Town application process. The emphasis changed to developing an infrastructure to support the Trail Town concept. The Development Board broadened its’ assistance to trail development and marketing. We assisted with signage development, mapping and brochures.
The City of Livingston has come back to life and has great hopes of becoming a premier destination for hikers, bikers, canoers and horseback riders. The Development Board remains a partner with the City of Livingston and the County Fiscal Court to make this a Rockcastle success story. Work will continue to develop the area for many years to come and the Development Board remains ready to help.
